Cruden Construction Limited have been working in partnership with Elevate Lancashire to develop mentoring services for women in construction through the Constructionskills and Woman and Work initiative.

Elevate Lancashire is one of the Government Housing Market Renewal pathfinders, charged with finding innovative solutions to the problems of low demand and housing market collapse in towns across Pennine Lancashire.

Through the housing market renewal, the Elevate programme has had a positive impact on construction in Pennine. With increased demand for skilled local labour, qualified contractors and suppliers the 'Constructing the Future' project was launched. Elevate aimed to offer local residents the opportunity to improve skills, gain qualifications, improve employability and access employment in the construction industry.

As part of this project the Constructionskills and Women and Work initiative was established to address the under representation of women in the construction industry. It aimed to create sustainable employment in construction for women in England, funding a minimum of NVQ Level 2 qualification and providing mentoring and support for at least six months of their employment.

Cruden's Mal Singleton, Resident Liaison Manager and Equality and Diversity Champion has worked extensively for Cruden in the Accrington area. Mal has built relationships with local Housing Associations, their Residents, Community Groups, Partner Contractors and Suppliers and has acted as mentor to many Apprentices and Trainees starting their careers in the construction industry.

Mal attended a Government certified course in mentoring at Ashton Under Lyne College with other volunteers successfully working in the North West's construction industry and is now fully certified. She is now able to offer mentoring services to any woman working in the North West's construction industry including building contractors, Housing Associations, Registered Social Landlords and Suppliers.

Currently Mal is acting a Mentor to a North West Housing Association employee who is experiencing difficulties in the workplace where Mal's guidance and support have been invaluable to finding workable solutions.
