Campbell Square, Liverpool

Campbell Square is a £12.5million diverse mixed-use, commercial regeneration development, in the heart of Liverpool's historic 'Ropewalks' area. The site covered three acres and featured surviving 18th, 19th and early 20th century commercial and domestic buildings, including five 'listed' buildings.

Cruden Construction sold the site to The Beetham Organisation and acted as design and build contractors to ensure that the sensitive refurbishment of the existing structures in line with English Heritage requirements was integrated with the new build elements.

The diverse scheme created 4,700sq.m of commercial space including offices, three bars and restaurants and one hundred and twenty eight residential apartments, together with a new public square. The main commercial office space occupied a prime position facing Duke Street, offering 3,127sq.m of space over five-storeys, complete with basement car parking. The residential and leisure elements were created in both the refurbished and new buildings, offering a range of apartment types and styles.

Various construction techniques were used on the new buildings including contiguous piling, steel frames, multi-deck floors, stainless steel standing seam and Kalzip aluminium roofs, facing brick, anti-sun curtain walling and powder coated aluminium windows. Service installations in the various buildings included passenger lifts, air conditioning, raised access floors and other essential heating and electrical services. The restored buildings featured similar specifications and included where possible original materials. The whole scheme expertly blends old with new.
