"Billy has been extremely customer focused throughout the project, constantly checking everything that was going into the building was going to be right for our customers"

Tracy Paine, Operations Director, Belong

Belong Crewe is a £5.9m extra care village in Cheshire for client Belong, part of the CLS Care Services Group. Cruden Construction Ltd won this design and build project following a competitive tendering process administered by the client's cost consultant Davis Langdon. The scheme delivered an impressive mix of 66 high dependency care units and 12 extra care apartments in Brookhouse Drive, Crewe, Cheshire

Architects for the scheme were Pozzoni Design Ltd. The project comprised the demolition of a former nursing home "The Waldren's" within the heart of an existing residential area and the design and construction of the new development.

Belong Crewe opened its doors in December 2010 with a pledge to help its residents enjoy life and retain their independence. The family-sized households have 66 large en-suite bedrooms for residential, dementia and nursing support and there are also 12 one and two bedroom stylish apartments included in the development. At the heart of the village is a bistro, an exercise studio, a licensed bar, internet cafe, and a function room.

Briefly construction comprised a foundation design using both piled and traditional strip foundations. Superstructures were of masonry construction using Q-Lite floors in the care facility and pre-cast reinforced concrete wide span floors in the extra care wing. A combination of singly ply membrane roofing and traditional trussed tiled roofs are utilised. External elevational treatments included facing brickwork, rendered panels, composite ship-lap boarding and insulated aluminium cladding panels. PVC and aluminium doors and windows are used throughout.

Mechanical and electrical services include mechanical heat recovery system, Aqua-mist fire systems, security alarms, warden call system, telephone and TV points, security lighting, passenger lifts, controlled access gates to main car park areas and disabled buggy charging facilities. Incoming statutory services are linked to the Building Management System.

The building is carefully finished with a range of internal decorative finishes, final fittings and components including floor and wall tiling, laminates, carpet and vinyl flooring, bespoke en-suite vanity units and fitted kitchens in the extra acre apartments.

Belong offers a range of spaces, facilities and services that are open to the public and available for hire. At the heart of the village, the Belong bistro is a family friendly cafe whilst the hair and beauty salon offers a range of hair services, products and beauty treatments. Wi-fi services and an internet café are also available.

The Venue is a large multi-purpose suite, complete with licensed bar and fully equipped with audio visual and sound equipment and the exercise studio is specially equipped to meet the exercise and activity needs of older people and people.

The scheme has won a Local Authority Building Control Award awarded independently by Local Authority Building Control Officers as the best quality construction in their area in the year by LABC Cheshire East.

This was our first project for Belong and it was our goal to ensure the client received a very high quality building delivered in a spirit of cooperation and partnership, on time and budget. We forged close relationships with the client and consultant team ensuring that at all times we were attentive to the needs of the client.

We were keen to innovate and to improve the information we provided to the client at handover. Our Site Manager produced a DVD demonstrating how key controls around this complex building work. Controls such as Door Entry, Key Fob Security, CCTV, Fire Suppression and Nurse Call systems. The DVD is a lasting reference for the scheme management team, demonstrating each system in a simple-to-follow format.

This is in addition to the tenant pack that Cruden always provide. Our Customer Care team is monitoring the effectiveness of the DVD and we believe that it should put Belong's scheme management team and their new tenants at ease about dealing with new and complex systems in and around their new homes.

Belong has completed a KPI Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire for the scheme and the table below shows the key achievements:
