Won in competitive design & build tenders, the two new medical centres extend Cruden Constructions long history of building community buildings which benefit local communities.
Constructed simultaneously, Greasby Health Centre occupies a former Local Authority recycling centre which was re-positioned prior to commencement of the works. The site for Greenway Road, Birkenhead Health Centre required demolition of a redundant petrol station and removal of the underground fuel tanks. Both sites were tested for contaminants before construction proceeded.
Both projects are part single and part two storey and essentially, the construction method employed for each followed a similar pattern. Reinforced concrete trench fill footings supported a pre-cast concrete beam and pot ground floor slab for Greasby and an in situ reinforced concrete ground floor slab at Birkenhead.
Superstructures comprised traditional brick and block cavity walls featuring a combination of contrasting brickwork bands, rendered panels and Ashlar simulated stone cills. Some structural steel members were incorporated to support upper floors and part of the roof structures. Upper floors were pre-cast concrete plank or beam and block and both buildings utilised pre-cast concrete staircases with metal balustrading and hardwood handrails. Trussed rafter, insulated roofs were finished in Redland concrete roof tiles with polyester powder coated galvanised steel rainwater goods.
Double glazed aluminium windows and aluminium entrance doors and screens completed the external appearances.
internally, block and metal stud partitioned walls , suspended and plasterboard skimmed ceilings sub-divide the buildings with hardwood veneered doors used throughout. Area specific non slip vinyl sheeting, heavy duty carpets and bacteria resistant carpeting are extensively used.
Mechanical and electrical installations include all incoming services, hot & cold water services, LTHW heating systems, lighting, fire alarm, security alarm, panic alarms, wiring for data, telecommunication systems and television system.
External works comprise parking areas, flagged and paviored footpaths, landscaping, bin stores and fencing.
Each centre offers, reception and waiting rooms, consulting and treatment rooms, administration areas, toilets, staff kitchens and shower rooms providing modern facilities for both staff, patients and visitors.
