The £5.6 million Halewood Leisure Centre completed for Knowsley Council is a fantastic state-of-the-art 'wet and dry' community sports, swimming and leisure centre. Central to the facilities, is a 25-metre swimming pool which has a moveable floor to provide variable depths offering the benefit of enabling people to learn to swim whilst also taking into account the needs of experienced swimmers. A four-court sports hall and a multi-purpose room, sprung for gymnastics, are also included within the complex.

An island reception desk, crèche and coffee bar, changing rooms, shower areas, viewing areas, sauna and steam room and administration offices complemented and supported the centres activities. Outdoor facilities include two outdoor floodlit synthetic mini football pitches alongside a natural grass pitch for rugby and football.

Construction comprised reinforced concrete strip foundations, exposed steel frame superstructure, and a curved 'wave' aluminium standing seam roof. The pool was constructed from reinforced concrete and featured a pool perimeter undercroft for the distribution of pool services from a dedicated basement plantroom. The building was clad in a mixture of 'Kingspan' insulated composite panels, glazed poolside curtain walling, glazed blocking and decorative art-stone.

Internal walls contain feature courses of art-stone. Depending upon location ceramic tiles, hardwood flooring and vinyl sheeting or tiles are used for floor coverings. The sports hall and multi-purpose rooms benefit from under-floor heating. A mixture of specialist downlighting and uplighting illuminates the pool and sports areas at night. Extensive car parking, within hard and soft landscaped external areas complete the scheme.
