Heyeswood Retirement Village in Haydock St Helens is £9.2m outstanding project built for Arena Housing Association. It is an impressive development it is own woodland setting, designed carefully to express its own individual character whilst blending in with its peaceful surroundings.

The Retirement Village aims to improve the quality of life and offer more choice and independent living to the residents by providing accessible homes suitable for people with a range of Extracare needs. The Retirement Village is a mix of 56 two bedroom and 36 one bedroom apartments available for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. The special care and attention to the external design has been extended to each apartment which features the following:

  • Fitted kitchen
  • Integral Zanussi hob and oven
  • Grohe euro sink and mixed tap
  • Slip resistant vinyl floor
  • Shower room with toilet
  • Mobility wet floor shower system
  • Thermostatically controlled shower
  • Matching WC and wash basin
  • Shaver point
  • Central heating
  • Warden call and entry phone communication
  • Telephone points in both living room and main bedroom
  • Fire and smoke alarm
  • 24 hour emergency support and secure environment.


Whilst the apartments were designed to provide modern and spacious living for the over 55's residents, many features were incorporated to the design to support Extracare living. Features such as double swing bathroom doors that allow access for staff should a resident slip in the bathroom, raised plug sockets to provide ease of access, 'wet room' one level show access and emergency call pull cords in the bedrooms, hall and bathroom.

Security
Residents benefit from the secure environment that Heyeswood provides through 24 hour support from the Arena staff who specialise in providing high quality care for people living in their own home and promoting independent living. Merseyside Police worked in partnership with the design and construction team to ensure the building and residents security was considered at each stage of the design. The scheme was awarded the 'Secured by Design' certification from Merseyside Police on completion of the build.

The development includes security features such as:

  • Swipe card access to private residential areas for residents and staff only
  • Video linked access system allowing residents to identify guests to allow access
  • Emergency call system linked to staff on site 24 hours per day
  • Central CCTV viewing internally and around the perimeter of the site


Facilities
Heyeswood Retirement Village offers residents a superb range of communal facilities which include; a communal lounge, hairdresser and beauty salon, health and fitness studio, guestroom, launderette, greenhouse, therapy/treatment room and assisted bathing suite. There is also a coffee shop and restaurant service plus private dinning room for special occasions and dinner parties.

Community Engagement
The scheme started on site on site in March 2008, during the build Cruden Construction build strong relationships with the community around the project and got involved where possible.

Local Primary School Grange Valley was situated close to the site Cruden delivered Health and Safety presentation to the children to warn of the dangers of entering a construction site and ran a poster competition for the children to produce a Health and Safety Poster which was displayed on the construction site of the dedicated 'Grange Valley Primary School New Board'. Cruden also supported the schools various activities through sponsoring competition prizes and events.

Cruden were delighted to extend support to local rugby club Haydock ARLFC through the sponsorship of some much needed sports equipment for the new season. Cruden donated Steeden balls and ball bags to the under 16's team who will be traveling throughout the North West various matches. Steve Davies Haydock ARLFC's Coach commented 'We are extremely grateful for the support that Cruden have offered Haydock ARLFC and we as coaches and commit members are pleased to see the club getting bigger and stronger, continuing to teach local children the values of sportsmanship, respect for others, healthy competition and trust'
